Laser Welding of Battery Cells
Electrically actuated vehicles receive their energy from battery cells, which are charged by an external power source or by an on-board power source. A vehicle can include several hundred battery cells. A differentiation is made between prismatic battery cells and round cells.
Typical Applications
Laser welding has proven itself at several points of the battery cell production process. The films stacked inside the battery cell can be joined by using a laser process. The connection of the film stack to the pole contacts can also be achieved by using a laser welding process.
The housing of the prismatic battery cell is closed by a seal weld. For this purpose, a lid is placed into the can and it is welded with exactly coordinated process parameters. The sealing plug is, in turn, welded by a laser after filling the battery cell with an electrolyte solution.
Example of a System Setup
- Single-mode or multi-mode laser
- intelliSCAN FT or intelliWELD II PR scan system
- ScaVis camera system for the component position recording
